On a recent trip to Uganda I was introduced to the concept of Table banking. This is a bank run by a local group of women with the purpose of helping women to save, but also to take out small loans to grow simple businesses. With the help of a monthly loan these ladies are given the opportunity to increase their earning capacity. The businesses that the women are involved in are buying and selling produce, buying and selling milk and silver fish. Seeing first hand how this scheme is bringing positive change in rural communities was inspiring.
Judy Sohnchen is responsible for launching this scheme in North West Uganda. Enjoy this short video where she explains how the scheme works and the value to the local community.
