Gorilla Summit Coffee
Uganda is a remarkable country but is still ranked very low on the human development index. One major issue they face is a high infant child mortality rate. This is even higher in rural areas like Kanungu, a very remote rural sub-county in the West of Uganda.
I first visited this region in February 2017 where I was introduced to Gerald Mbabaz who is the founder and CEO of Gorilla Summit Coffee. I was asked whether I would be interested in investing in his coffee business.
With my passion for community transformation, there was an amazing opportunity to make a difference in the lives of farmers and their children’s futures.
The meeting with Gerald convinced me that this was a project worthy of investment. Gerald was a man full of integrity, compassion with a great education.
There is something more sustainable and permanent with Community Transformation than just doing good. I love how Gerald is providing the possibility for children to get schooling, providing medical care for the most vulnerable and looking at coaching the farmers to have much better yields in their crops so that have more disposal income to care for their family and to create a future for themselves.
Put simply Gerald and his team at Gorilla Summit Coffee have a mission to use their coffee business to transform their community. They are actively involved in initiatives such as:
Maternity clinics in remote areas. These are so essential as mothers have no access to hospital care and many of the babies die due to inadequate birthing facilities and professional care.
Solar panels for coffee growers houses
Funding education for children
Mosquito nets for coffee grower’s families
These practical initiatives raise the quality (and length) of life for over 1800 coffee growers and their families. They actively work with these growers in sustainable methods that result in better yields and higher quality coffee. The coffee is of such high quality that premium prices mean incomes of these otherwise vulnerable families can double.
There is still much to be done in this area of Uganda, but we are encouraged that this is only the beginning of great transformation to a region and the gospel to be brought to such needy people.
